Special Announcement

We are excited to welcome Mr. John Wilkes as a guest speaker!

Mr. John Wilkes
Guest Speaker

Mr. John Wilkes joined the Governor’s School faculty in 1992 following 11 years of experience in the marketing field.  He holds a BA in History and Government from the University of Virginia, where he graduated with distinction, and a M.T. in Education and a M.A. in History, both from the University of Richmond.  Mr. Wilkes received one of the Richmond area’s R.E.B. Awards for teaching excellence in 1998 and he was nominated for the Disney American Teacher Awards in 1999.  He is a reading consultant for The College Board’s AP U.S. History examination, a clinical faculty member in VCU’s School of Education, and has served as a history education consultant for numerous local and regional organizations.

Sarah Clifton
Now a senior, Sarah has been taking part in Model UN since eighth grade and is excited to be a co-chair of the British House of Commons.  When she manages to dig herself out of the pile of schoolwork that never seems to stop growing, Sarah enjoys taking long walks on the beach while singing “Bohemian Rhapsody,” and eating pizza, by candlelight of course.  Well, at least some of that was true.  During the week, she maintains her sanity, or what’s left of it, through small connections with the outside world.  This includes dance class and the occasional T.V. break to watch “Gilmore Girls” and “Glee.”

Melody Wang
Melody is a junior at Maggie Walker and started at Model UN as a delegate in eighth grade.  Since then, she has attended multiple conferences and served as vice-chair of the Pakistani Cabinet at GSMUN XIII.  Besides Model UN, Melody is involved in Public Forum Debate, Classical Club, and Future Problem Solving and serves as the Features Editor of the school newspaper.  In addition, Melody runs track, takes ballet and pointe lessons, and has been playing piano for over seven years.  She always appreciates witty remarks and humor in conversation and particularly enjoys watching Modern Family and Burn Notice while simultaneously devouring all food in the vicinity.

Justin Shawler
Justin is a junior at Maggie Walker and is working with his two chairs to make BHoC a wonderfully entertaining historical committee.  He absolutely enjoyed representing Siam in the Paris Peace Conference at VAMUN XXX because it gave him experience with a historical committee.  He also served as a mock delegate and general volunteer at GSMUN XIII.  When he is not studying for the next Russian test or reading for Comparative Government, Justin likes to run on Maggie Walker’s Cross Country team, pole vault during the track season, and sail small boats on Virginia’s rivers.  He also enjoys reading, watching West Wing, and following global politics.
