We are excited to welcome Dr. William Morgan as a guest speaker!

Dr William Morgan
Director, Regional Studies, Marine Corps War College
Guest Speaker

Dr. William Morgan retired from the Department of State in 2010 after 31 years in the Foreign Service. His final assignment was Director of Analysis for East Asia and the Pacific in the Bureau of Intelligence and Research. His more than twenty years abroad included three tours in Japan as well as postings in South Africa, Venezuela, and Hungary. In Washington, Dr. Morgan was chief of the Japan-Korea desk in the US Information Agency and later Acting Director of the International Visitor Program of the Department of State. During 2001-2003, he was Marine Corps War College’s first State Department Chair. In 2007-2009, as visiting scholar in Georgetown University’s Graduate School of Foreign Service, he taught US-Japan-Northeast Asian relations, Public Diplomacy and National Security.

Dr. Morgan received a Ph.D. in history from the Claremont Graduate University in 1980, specializing in diplomatic history and East Asian studies. He served as a Marine Corps officer on active duty from 1969-1972 and in the reserves until 1979.


Ben Zavelsky
Ben is a junior and has been involved in Model UN since 8th grade.  Last year he was the vice-chair of the Human Rights Council, and he has participated in conferences at UVA, William & Mary, and Washington, D.C.  When not working with GSMUN, Ben plays varsity volleyball, participates in Public Forum debate, and interns at the Virginia General Assembly building.  In his spare time, he plays pickup lacrosse, listens to Dave Matthews Band, and watches How I Met Your Mother.

Eileen Wang
Eileen is a junior at Maggie Walker and has been involved in Model UN for three years.  From representing Eveline Herfkens in the MDG Summit 2015 at VAMUN XXX to being on the Crisis Staff at GSMUN XIII, she has enjoyed every bit of her Model UN experience.  Aside from Model UN, she is also involved with many other activities such as swimming, lifeguarding at her local Y, and coaching swimmers for the Special Olympics.  She also is the current Junior Class Secretary and a Red Cross Youth Council member.  In her free time, she enjoys reading, learning new languages and cultures, and discovering the wonders of human cognition.
